Good Week for the Mean Green

What a fun first week of the season.  We had a couple of wins and a loss, but more importantly, I saw a lot of girls doing a lot of great things.  Several girls have begun to hit the ball and at times, we have looked good on defense.  If we can ever get some time at practice without it raining, freezing, or blowing us away, then we can fix some of the things that are causing us problems.

Lets remember to focus on all the positive parts of the games with our girls.  They won't remember much of anything, except what we reinforce to them.  If they hear negative things, they will focus on the negative.  If they hear positive things, they will focus on that.  Most times, they will not even catch the negative parts until someone points them out.  We can really help their enjoyment of the game by focusing on the positive.  I am not saying that they don't need to be told what to do or what they should have done, because they do need those things as well.  They will learn from being corrected.

If you can, keep emphasizing "the next play" to your daughters. They should learn from the previous plays, but they can only do something on the next play.  Less focus on what has happened and more focus on what can happen will really help them.  The scoreboard is a summary of what has happened.  If we focus on just the scoreboard, then that makes every loss a failure for everyone.  If we can focus on our next at-bat, or our next ground ball, fly-ball, throw, catch, etc. then we can make them more mentally ready for everything that comes their way, not just in softball, but in life.
